Welkom by die Skaakmeesters Akademie!

Bv. geduld, selfvertroue, konsentrasie, selfbeeld ensovoorts.

Welcome at the Chessmasters Academy! This is a private organisation which was launched in 2006 and has since been furthering chess in Kimberley and surrounding towns. We are not part of Northern Cape Chess of school chess (Nocussa), nor are we province bound.

What is the aim of playing chess at the Academy?

Chess is not just another board game, although parents have this general perception thereof. Chess is a means to help a player to:
  • overcome problems
  • enhance characteristics like concentration, focus and self image
  • teach a child to THINK
  • grow good sportmanship
  • learn to respect other people
  • teach a child to lisen when he is spoken to, etc.

The Academy's main aim is to give individual chess coaching to interested junior players, no matter from what town, school or age they are. We want to lay a strong foundation and enhance the player's playing level, so that he or she can confidently and competitively participate, even in national chess championships.

If a child has learning or other  problems, chess is an excellent activity to help with this. The Academy specialises in identifying problem areas in children and then help them and the parents to address this issues.

The whole aim of playing chess is to “reform” the player so that he can adapt to the game. To achieve this, a lot of attention needs to be given to the player to determine where the problem areas are.

The Academy is equipped to host tournaments and because of the fact that we can work with other provinces, it can lead to our players broadening their knowledge and getting exposure to competition circumstances.

There is two methods to teaching children to play chess:

1. In general players are taught specific game patterns and these they must memorise. This method can work for beginners. Every game is different and therefor this method will only work to a specific point, at which it will become too difficult. This method does not teach the child to think for himself.

2. The Chessmasters Academy evaluates each child and identifies the properties needed to become a successful player. For instance, patience, self-confidence, concentration, self image, etc. If there is problemes in these areas, those are the issues that will be addressed first.

The player must be able to fit into the game requirements, otherwise he or she will never become a balanced chess player. The advantage of this coaching method is that the individual's behaviour and thoughts are worked on and enhanced so that it flows through to his school work, life, and later his university and working environment in the future.

Chess is not a game that only the player must be taught. It is actually a family activity. The Academy works together with the child and his parents to make sure they know what chess is all about.

It is the passion of the Academy to teach the child chess in the correct manner so that he can be proud of his or her accomplishments - not only in chess but also in becoming a better person.

We love this wonderful board game and are proud to see the accomplishments of the children we have coached. Not only seing them excel in chess but also overcoming possible problems in their life, thus helping them grow as a human being.

The coaching takes place in Kimberley. Thie individual approach to the classes is of utmost importance, as each child is developed as an individual - not only as a chess player but almost more importantly as a unique person. Aspects like patience, concentration, self image etc. are addressed during the process. They are also taught that everything does not revolve around winning, but that chess can be enjoyed and it can be fun, no matter the outcome. Bad losers learn to overcome their disappointments through selfcontrol and perseverance, and that losing is nothing to be ashamed of, but must be seen as a stepping stone to improve in the future.

The unorthodox coaching method of the Academy work in that it teaches the child to be on the lookout for certain game patterns and specific moves. It requires concentration and thinking to remember all the strategies and can only be overcome with diligent practise and commitment. Age is no guarantee in chess - the youngest child can beat an adult - there is no stoping a winner once they have had the correct coaching!

Countless players that has joined the Academy since 2006, has won medals locally as well as nationally and most of them also participated in the annual SA Jnr Chess Championships held by CHESSA.

If your child is shy, have a bad self- image or cannot sit still, then CHESS is the answer. We have seen so many examples of children who changed from quiet, sad people into self- assured and happy individuals, through the implementation of our unique chess coaching techniques.

Chess can address the following important development areas in a child
:

  1. Identity - A strong sense of identity is essential for a child to grow from an infant into a self-assured adult. Chess teach him self-confidence, which is the most important aspect in building his own identity
  2. Concepts - Helps children to orientate and order themselves and their thoughts. Helps to develop motor skills and space perception
  3. Communication - This is the foundation to establsih language, oral and listening skills
  4. Creativity - Focus on problem solving, critical thughts, self awareness and behavioural patterns
  5. Positive self-image
There is so many advantages one can think of where chess can help to develop a child's character. And where there is problems and issues, it can be used as a tool to convert these negatives into positive growth of the child's personality.
